Junior Wimbledon wildcard experience a dream come true for teenager Annabel
Active Bolton Tennis Academy player Annabel Wong made her Grand Slam debut at Junior Wimbledon, in recognition of her commitment, dedication and outstanding performances over the past 12 months.
Annabel was awarded a prestigious wildcard to compete alongside the best junior players in the world, playing against opponents up to two years her senior.
However, it proved a tough challenge for the Active Bolton Tennis Academy starlet, who despite losing in both the singles and doubles competitions describes her appearance as a ‘dream come true”.
“Visiting Wimbledon as a young tennis player and watching so many of the game’s greatest players compete on the famous grass courts has always inspired me,” says Annabel. “To be able to step onto those courts myself and compete against some of the best junior players in the world has given me even more experience at the highest level.”
Annabel, aged sixteen, has been training at Active Bolton Arena since the age of nine, having first picked up a tennis racket when she was just six years old.
Throughout her journey she has progressed through every stage of the Academy’s performance pathway, developing from a young beginner into one of the country’s most promising junior players.
As part of her development, Annabel was selected for the LTA Regional Player Development Centre (RPDC) programme, which supports talented players aged 10–14 and provides additional coaching and competition opportunities to help them reach their full potential.
Despite several niggling injuries along the way, Annabel has enjoyed an impressive run of results on the junior ITF circuit over the past year, earning valuable international experience against some of the best young players in Europe – performances rewarded with the wildcard opportunity.

It proves that if you’re prepared to put in the time and effort, even when faced with setbacks, opportunities like this can come your way. We couldn’t be prouder of what she has achieved.”
Annabel, from Macclesfield, was following in the footsteps of fellow Active Bolton Arena Tennis Academy player April Sackflame, who took part in an under-14 invitational event last year. April has since gone on to join the Lawn Tennis Association’s National Academy at Loughborough.
Academy Head Coach, Elliot Chang, adds: “It’s been a few years since we’ve had one of our academy players compete in a Grand Slam, and Annabel’s achievement shows that everything we’re building within the Active Bolton Tennis Academy is working. We’re incredibly proud of her.
“Last year we had April represent the academy at a Wimbledon invitational and it’s fantastic to see another of our players following suit. It demonstrates the strength of our player pathway and the quality of coaching and support available here at Active Bolton Arena.”
